Chapter 8 - The Mother's Trust

“You bought the house?!” Diane shrieked hysterically. “With what money?! You work as a bank teller!”
“I am the Vice President of Risk Management,” I corrected her coldly. “And I used the trust fund.”
When I said those words, Dad’s knees physically buckled. He dropped onto the top step of the porch, burying his face in his hands.
“What trust fund?” Claire demanded, completely lost.
I looked dead into my father's eyes. “The trust fund my late mother left exclusively for me before she died. The one you secretly tried to forge my signature on three years ago to pay for Diane’s massive credit card debts.”
The family gasped in sheer horror. Mason stepped away from his father, utterly disgusted.
“I caught the fraudulent transfer before it cleared,” I whispered, the raw, demonic agony of that betrayal vibrating in my tone. “I realized my own father was willing to steal his dead wife’s money to fund his new family's luxury lifestyle. I could have sent you to federal prison for fraud.”
Dad wept pathetically on the porch.
“But I didn't,” I said. “I bought the house instead. I let you live here because I knew that as long as I controlled the roof over your head, you could never steal from me again. I stayed in the background, paying the bills, watching my investment, waiting for the day you would prove you hadn't changed.”
I looked at the $9,600 Italy charges.
