Chapter 5 - The Police Threat

Back in Rome, the situation in the luxury hotel lobby escalated into a complete, humiliating disaster.
Since my premium card was permanently frozen, the hotel manager demanded an alternative form of payment for the $3,200 they had already racked up in room service, spa treatments, and minibar charges during their first few hours.
Diane aggressively pulled out her own credit cards, slapping them onto the marble counter with arrogant disgust.
Declined.
She tried a second card. Declined.
Dad tried his emergency business card. Declined.
Because I had severed the cash flow to their accounts, their entire fragile financial ecosystem had instantly evaporated.
The hotel manager’s polite smile vanished. He signaled for the hotel security, speaking in rapid, angry Italian.
“Sir, if you cannot provide a valid payment for the services rendered, I will have no choice but to contact the Carabinieri,” the manager warned coldly.
Diane burst into hysterical tears, the sheer, unadulterated humiliation breaking her high-society facade. The wealthy guests in the lobby stopped and stared as the arrogant American family was detained by security.
Dad was forced to call his own elderly mother, begging and pleading on his knees in the middle of the lobby for a wire transfer just to keep them out of an Italian jail.
