Chapter 2 - The Ring on the Table

Camille’s soft, mocking laugh died instantly in her throat. She looked at Landon, completely bewildered.
"Landon, don't be dramatic," Camille whispered, leaning in and grabbing his arm. "My mother is just stressed about the photos. Your dad’s suit really doesn't match the color scheme."
Landon slowly pulled his arm out of her grip. He didn't scream. He didn't cause a violent scene. The sheer, quiet intensity of his actions was infinitely more devastating.
He stood up from his chair. Fighting back hot tears of betrayal and rage, Landon raised his left hand. With a slow, deliberate motion, he slid the heavy platinum wedding ring completely off his finger.
The wealthy guests sitting at the surrounding tables gasped audibly.
Landon leaned over and placed the expensive wedding ring directly onto the pristine white tablecloth, setting it gently right beside his weeping father’s plate.
"Let's go, Dad," Landon said gently, placing a strong, protective hand on his father’s shaking shoulder.
Camille dropped her silk napkin onto her lap in sheer, paralyzing shock. "Landon! Where are you going?! We haven't even cut the cake!"
"You can eat it yourselves," Landon replied coldly, not even looking at her.
He helped his father stand up. Frank kept his head down, deeply humiliated, but Landon held his arm firmly, walking him proudly past the furious mother-in-law in the red gown.
Margot’s face turned the color of a tomato. "You walk out of this ballroom, Landon, and my husband will destroy your pathetic little construction company by tomorrow morning!"
