Chapter 5 - The Contract Denied

"Yes, Mr. CEO?" the voice of Landon’s COO echoed through the quiet ballroom.
"Cancel the waterfront contract negotiations with Richard’s firm," Landon ordered smoothly, his dark eyes never leaving his horrified father-in-law.
"Landon, no!" Camille shrieked, sprinting around the table in her heavy white lace dress, desperately grabbing his arm. "You can't do this! My father will lose everything!"
"Are you sure, sir?" the COO asked on the phone. "They are the lowest bidder."
"I am absolutely sure," Landon replied. "Give the contract to their primary competitor. And have our legal team audit every single building Richard’s firm has constructed for us in the past five years. If you find a single code violation, sue them into bankruptcy."
"Understood, sir. It's done."
Landon hung up the phone.
Richard let out a horrific, guttural groan, clutching his chest as his entire billionaire empire evaporated into thin air. He collapsed into his dining chair, his face buried in his hands.
Margot shrieked hysterically, realizing she was about to lose her mansion, her country club membership, and her diamonds.
"Landon, I love you!" Camille sobbed pathetically, dropping to her knees on the marble floor, her expensive tiara slipping off her blonde hair. "I was wrong! I'll respect your dad! I'll do anything! Please don't leave me!"
"You didn't love me, Camille," Landon said quietly, looking down at the weeping bride. "You loved the idea of controlling a poor man. You just picked the wrong one."

Landon turned his back on the hysterical, ruined family. He placed his hand gently on his father’s back and guided him out of the grand ballroom, leaving the wedding ring sitting abandoned on the white tablecloth.
