Chapter 1 - The Breach in the Fortress

The heavy, reinforced steel door sat ajar, an impossible sight in a penthouse designed to be an impenetrable fortress.
Dante pushed it open aggressively, his hand instinctively hovering near the custom holster inside his sleek, all-black tailored suit. As the city's most feared and calculated crime boss, he expected to find a team of highly trained assassins waiting for him in the shadows. He expected gunfire. He expected blood.
Instead, he froze.
Bathed in the cold, blue glow of his private, ultra-luxury security monitors, a tiny figure sat in his oversized leather executive chair. It was a seven-year-old Caucasian girl. She had pale blonde hair tied back in a messy, frayed braid, and she was swallowed up by a slightly oversized, faded cream knit cardigan. She sat perfectly still in the dark mahogany wood-paneled room, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that revealed the glowing, sprawling American city skyline at night.
Dante’s sharp jawline tightened. His face, usually an unreadable mask of lethal readiness, transitioned into profound confusion. He stared at the back of her head, his heart pounding in a slow, controlled rhythm. No one bypassed the biometric locks. No one.
He took a slow, deliberate step onto the plush carpet.
“How did you get past the lock?” Dante demanded, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that usually made grown men tremble.
Elara didn’t flinch. She didn't turn around. She kept her wide, innocent eyes locked onto the glowing screens in front of her.
“They're already here,” she whispered, her voice barely carrying over the hum of the servers.
She slowly raised her small, trembling arm, extending a single finger to point directly at the center monitor. It displayed a black-and-white surveillance feed of a cleaner pushing a cart down the 40th-floor hallway.

“Look,” Elara said, her voice quiet but hauntingly steady. “Your cameras are lying.”
