Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Trap

"You always were a coward, Victor," Dante spoke into the intercom, his voice entirely devoid of fear. His calm, restrained emotion was far more terrifying than any exaggerated screaming.

Outside the door, Victor laughed. "A coward who just outsmarted the smartest man in the city! I’ve been skimming from your shipments for two years, Dante. The Cartel pays much better than you do. And tonight? Tonight, the headlines will say the great Dante was taken out by his enemies, and I, his loyal right-hand man, will inherit the throne to 'avenge' him."

Dante's eyes flicked to the security monitors. The looped footage of Maria was still playing, mocking him.

"And the housekeeper?" Dante asked smoothly, stalling for time as his fingers silently danced across a hidden, secondary keyboard tucked beneath the mahogany desk. "What did Maria do to deserve getting dragged into your mess?"

"That stupid maid thought she could blackmail me!" Victor spat viciously. "She found my ledgers. I have her tied up in the grand foyer right now. Once my men blow this door and put a bullet in your head, I'm throwing her off the balcony and telling the cops she was a Cartel spy who let the assassins in. It’s the perfect story!"

Elara buried her face into Dante’s suit jacket, her small body shaking violently. Hearing the man outside plan her mother's murder was too much for the seven-year-old.

Dante looked down at the girl. His entire life had been about power, money, and control. He had never cared about the collateral damage. But looking at Elara, something inside the ruthless crime boss shifted permanently. Victor had crossed a line that could not be uncrossed.

Dante finished typing on the hidden keyboard. A small, biometric scanner slid out from the wood paneling. He pressed his thumb against it.

"You made one mistake, Victor," Dante said, his voice dropping to an icy, dead tone.

"Oh yeah? And what's that?" Victor sneered.
