Chapter 7 - The Standoff in the Dark

Dante lowered his weapon. He couldn't shoot Victor yet. Not while Maria was still at the mercy of the guards in the grand foyer.
He moved silently through the grand dining room, tracking the remaining men. The emergency backup generators finally kicked in, but Dante had programmed them to only provide a dim, bloody crimson emergency lighting. The penthouse looked like a descending hell.
In the grand foyer, surrounded by towering marble columns and a sweeping staircase, Victor stood panting, his eyes wild with fear. Two guards dragged Maria out from the hallway. She was bruised, terrified, and sobbing quietly, but she kept her head high.
Victor grabbed Maria roughly by the hair, pressing the barrel of his pistol against her temple.
"Dante!" Victor screamed into the empty, red-lit room. "I know you're watching! I know you're out there! You drop your weapon and step into the light, or the maid dies right here! I'll paint this marble with her brains!"
From the shadows of the second-floor balcony, Dante stared down at the scene. He had a clear shot at Victor, but the two guards had their weapons aimed squarely at Maria’s chest. If he shot Victor, the guards’ reflex triggers would pull. Maria would die. And Elara would be an orphan.
Dante slowly deactivated his night-vision goggles. He took a deep breath, his facial micro-expressions showing a rare flicker of raw, protective instinct. He couldn't let Elara's mother die.
With a slow, deliberate movement, Dante ejected the magazine from his handgun and let it clatter loudly onto the floor.
The sound echoed through the massive foyer. Victor and the guards snapped their weapons toward the balcony.
Dante stepped out of the shadows and walked slowly down the sweeping staircase, his hands raised in a gesture of surrender. His tailored suit caught the dim red light. He looked completely unarmed and completely defeated.
"Let her go, Victor," Dante said, his voice calm, showing incredible restraint. "You want me. Not her."
Victor’s face twisted into a massive, triumphant grin. He had done it. He had brought the king to his knees.

"Look at you," Victor mocked, laughing breathlessly. "The great Dante, surrendering for a peasant who cleans his toilets. How pathetic."
