Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Traitor

In the fraction of a second that Victor looked away, paralyzed by the realization that his entire life was over, Dante moved.

He didn't have a gun, but he had something faster. With a lightning-fast motion, Dante reached behind his back, drawing a sleek, black ceramic throwing knife hidden in his waistband. In one fluid, cinematic motion, he snapped his wrist.

The knife buried itself deep into the shoulder of Victor’s gun arm.

Victor screamed in agony, dropping the pistol. The weapon clattered loudly against the marble floor.

Before the two remaining guards could comprehend what was happening, Maria, fueled by a mother's desperate adrenaline, threw her weight backward, knocking the guard behind her off balance.

Dante closed the distance instantly. He grabbed Victor’s dropped weapon from the floor, rolled, and fired two precise, calculated shots. Both guards dropped to the floor, completely incapacitated.

Silence slammed back into the red-lit grand foyer, broken only by Victor’s pathetic whimpering as he clutched his bleeding shoulder, crawling backward like a terrified insect.

Dante stood up slowly, the gun hanging loosely in his hand. He looked down at the man who had betrayed him.

"Please, Dante... please!" Victor begged, tears streaming down his face, his arrogance completely shattered. "We're brothers! I made a mistake! I'm sorry!"

Dante looked at him with absolute disgust. "You brought violence into my home. You threatened a child. You are nothing to me."

Dante didn't shoot him. Death was too easy. He pulled out his phone and tossed it onto Victor's chest. "You have five minutes to run before the syndicate arrives to clean up the mess you made. If I ever see your face in my city again, I won't be so generous."

Victor scrambled to his feet, crying hysterically, and fled into the darkness of the elevator shaft, fleeing into a world that would hunt him forever.

Dante turned around. Maria was sitting on the floor, shaking uncontrollably, her face buried in her hands. Dante holstered the weapon and knelt gently beside her.

"It's over, Maria," Dante said softly, offering his hand. "You're safe."
