Chapter 6 - Shadows and Silence

Dante pressed a button, and the heavy steel door of the safe room silently slid open just a few inches. He slipped out into the pitch-black hallway like a phantom, the door locking securely behind him to protect Elara.

Through his night-vision goggles, the world was painted in stark, glowing green. He could see Victor’s men stumbling over the plush carpets, their expensive tactical flashlights useless as Dante had activated the penthouse’s emergency signal jammers, which fried any unshielded electronics.

"Stay together! Use the walls!" Victor screamed from down the corridor, his voice high-pitched with sudden panic. "Blow the door!"

Two men fumbled with the explosive charges near the safe room. They never even heard Dante approach.

Moving with the silent, lethal grace of a predator, Dante stepped behind the first man. Pfft. One suppressed shot. The man crumpled to the floor without a sound. Before the second man could react to his partner dropping, Dante grabbed him by the tactical vest, pulled him into the shadows, and struck him violently with the butt of his pistol.

Two down. Eight to go.

Dante didn't rush. He didn't use fast, exaggerated body movements. His actions were smooth, deliberate, and terrifyingly efficient. He was defending his castle, and he knew every blind corner, every hidden alcove, and every structural pillar.

He moved through the lavish living room, taking out three more guards who were blindly firing their weapons into the dark, terrified of the shadows. The suppressed gunfire was completely masked by their own chaotic screaming.

Victor was losing his mind. He could hear his men dropping, but he couldn't see a thing.

"Fire! Just fire everywhere!" Victor roared, blindly shooting his assault rifle into the expensive mahogany walls, shattering glass and destroying priceless art.

Dante stood perfectly still behind a marble pillar just ten feet away, watching his former best friend unravel into a pathetic, cowardly mess. The betrayal still stung, but the anger was cold now.

He raised his weapon, aiming directly at Victor's chest. But then, Victor did something desperate.
