Chapter 10 - The Family He Never Had

The heavy steel door of the safe room slid open, and a tiny figure in an oversized cream cardigan sprinted out into the hallway.
"Mommy!"
Elara’s voice shattered the heavy tension in the penthouse. Maria let out a choked, beautiful sob as she caught her daughter in a desperate embrace, burying her face in Elara’s pale blonde hair. The two of them collapsed together on the marble floor, crying tears of pure relief and profound love.
Dante stood a few feet away, watching them in silence. For the first time in his dark, violent life, the crime boss felt a strange sense of peace. He had spent his entire existence building walls, hoarding wealth, and fighting for power, yet nothing had ever felt as triumphant as returning a terrified little girl to her mother.
After a few minutes, Maria slowly stood up, holding Elara tightly against her hip. She looked at Dante, her eyes filled with an overwhelming, unspeakable gratitude.
"Thank you, sir," Maria whispered, her voice cracking. "I don't know how I will ever repay you for saving us."
Dante shook his head slowly, his sharp features softening into a rare, genuine smile. "You don't owe me anything, Maria. In fact, Elara saved my life tonight. If she hadn't shown me those cameras, I'd be dead."
He looked around the ruined penthouse, the shattered glass, the bullet holes in the mahogany. It was just a house. It didn't matter anymore.
"You can't go back to your old apartment," Dante said, his tone shifting into protective authority. "Victor’s mess will take a while to clean up. From now on, you and Elara are under my personal protection. You'll move into the guest estate. You aren't my cleaner anymore, Maria. You are the head of this household. No one will ever touch you or your daughter again."
Elara peeked over her mother’s shoulder, her wide, innocent eyes meeting Dante’s. She didn't see a monster anymore. She saw her hero.
"Thank you, Mr. Dante," Elara said sweetly, reaching out her small hand.
Dante stepped forward and gently shook her tiny hand. The ruthless crime boss, betrayed by his closest friends, had finally found the one thing money and power couldn't buy: absolute loyalty, and a family to protect.
The shadows in the penthouse faded as the morning sun finally began to rise over the city skyline, casting a warm, golden light across the floor.

Justice was served. The innocent were protected. And Dante would never be alone again.
Did you think Dante’s punishment for Victor was satisfying, or did he let the traitor off too easy?
