Chapter 11 - Lily Told Daniel What Nora Had Said In Secret

That night Daniel slept outside Lily’s bedroom.
Not because he believed Nora could still reach them—she had already been removed from the house by then—but because neither father nor daughter could bear distance.
Around midnight, Lily padded into the hallway in socks and curled beside him under the blanket he had spread on the floor.
After a while she whispered:
“She said if you got sick, everything would be easier.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“When did she say that?”
“In the kitchen.”
“What else?”
Lily twisted the blanket in her fingers.
“She said moms who die leave room for better wives.”
Daniel went very still.
Lily quickly looked up, frightened by his silence.
“Did I say it wrong?”
“No, sweetheart.”
“Are you mad?”
“Not at you.”
He smoothed her hair back from her face.
“Did she ever hurt you before today?”
Lily shook her head.
“Not like that. Just grabbing.”
“Did she ever give you anything to eat or drink that made you feel funny?”
Another pause.
“Milk once. I got sleepy.”
Daniel’s heartbeat thudded painfully.
He kept his voice steady with effort.
“Did you tell anyone?”
“She said I was dramatic.”
There it was again.
That single word.
Used to shrink a child’s fear into misbehavior.
Used to train silence.
Daniel held Lily until she fell asleep against his shoulder.
By morning, he had made two decisions:
Nora would never come back into the house.
May you like
And Lily would never again be left alone to carry a danger adults refused to see.
