Chapter 8 - Nora Claimed She Only Wanted Lily Gone

Daniel sent Lily upstairs with the housekeeper for a few minutes and locked the dining room doors behind them.
Then he faced Nora.
She was still pale, still breathing too hard, still one hand pressed to her reddened cheek.
“You have one chance,” he said.
“What was on those cookies?”
Nora shook her head.
“You’re making this bigger than it is.”
“The floor is fizzing.”
“It was only enough to make you sick.”
Daniel stared at her.
His voice came out flat.
“Only.”
Tears sprang into Nora’s eyes, but they did nothing to soften him now.
“I panicked,” she whispered. “You were never going to send Lily away.”
That sentence hit him harder than the rest.
He took one step toward her.
“What did you just say?”
Nora folded inward, but not with remorse—with desperation.
“She ruined everything!” she burst out. “Everything in this house revolved around her. Your money, your time, your affection, your future—it was always about Lily, Lily, Lily!”
Daniel felt sick.
“She is my daughter.”
“And I am your wife!”
“You were.”
Nora went still.
He continued, each word cleaner and colder than the last.
“You wanted me sick. Maybe worse. So you could control this house without my child in the way.”
Nora’s face twisted.
“I just wanted her gone!”
Daniel’s hand clenched at his side.
That confession was enough.
Not legally, maybe.
Not yet.
But morally?
May you like
The marriage ended right there in that dining room.
