Chapter 4 - Daniel Didn’t See The Pattern Yet

Daniel did notice that Lily had become quieter.

He just misunderstood why.

He thought his daughter was still struggling to adjust to life with a stepmother.

He thought grief still lived too close to the surface.

He thought maybe school was tiring her out.

He thought many things.

He did not think his own wife might be hiding something dangerous in his own house.

That was not because he was foolish.

It was because people rarely suspect catastrophe while they are still arranging dinner plates and answering emails and paying bills.

Life disguises disaster as routine—until it doesn’t.

A few times he asked Nora if something was wrong between her and Lily.

Each time Nora answered flawlessly.

“I’m trying, Daniel.”

“She’s sensitive.”

“She misses her mother.”

“She’s testing boundaries.”

And every answer sounded reasonable enough to calm a man who wanted harmony in his home.

Still, doubt had begun to gather.

One afternoon he overheard Lily refuse a cookie at snack time.

That was unlike her.

“You don’t want one?” he asked.

Lily shook her head without looking up.

Nora answered too quickly.

“She said they tasted funny yesterday.”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

“Funny how?”

Lily whispered, “I don’t know.”

Nora laughed again—that soft, polished laugh Daniel had once found elegant.

“She’s being dramatic.”

Lily’s eyes flicked up at once.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Something about that look unsettled him.

For the first time, Daniel began to wonder whether he had missed more than moodiness.

But before he could press further, his phone rang.

And just like that, the moment passed.

Danger was patient.

May you like

It waited.
