Chapter 5 - Lily Found The Proof By Accident
The proof came from a mistake Nora never meant to make.
The afternoon before the confrontation, Lily was playing hide-and-seek with herself—a lonely child’s version of play—when she crawled beneath the long sideboard in the dining room and found something small caught near the leg of the cabinet.
It was one of Nora’s hairpins.
And right behind it, nearly hidden in the shadow, was the tiny vial.
The same kind Lily had seen in Nora’s hand.
She pulled it out carefully.
There was still a little sticky clear residue inside.
Lily didn’t know what poison looked like.
She didn’t even know if this was poison.
But she knew it belonged to Nora.
And she knew Nora had been hiding it.
She carried it to her bedroom and tucked it inside her toy jewelry box, under old beads and a plastic ring.
For the first time, the child felt she had something real.
Something she could show her father.
But fate moved faster than courage.
That same evening, Daniel came home early.
Nora seemed unusually warm.
The table was already set.
Candles were lit.
And on a decorative plate sat a row of cookies.
“Dessert first?” Daniel joked.
Nora smiled.
“Why not?”
Lily saw the plate from the hallway and went cold all over.
Because one cookie was slightly shinier than the others.
