Chapter 7 - The Slap That Broke The Marriage

When Daniel stood, Nora backed away instantly.

She saw it in his eyes before he moved.

This was no longer confusion.

No longer domestic tension.

No longer something she could smooth over with tone and timing.

This was recognition.

“You don’t understand,” she began.

But the words came too late.

Daniel crossed the space between them in three hard steps and slapped her.

Once.

Sharp.

Violent.

Enough to send her reeling sideways.

“ARE YOU TRYING TO POISON ME RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY DAUGHTER?!”

Lily stood behind him, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.

Nora clutched her cheek.

“I wasn’t trying to kill you!”

Daniel turned slowly.

The room went silent.

Nora seemed to realize at once what she had admitted.

Lily stared at her father’s back.

Then at Nora.

Then at the bubbling remains of the cookies on the floor.

Daniel’s voice dropped, low and terrifying.

“If you say one more word, make sure it’s the truth.”

Nora opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Looked toward the door.

Daniel saw that too.

And for the first time in his adult life, he looked at the woman he had married and felt not confusion, not anger alone—but fear.

Not fear of her strength.

Fear of how thoroughly she had hidden herself until now.

He turned to Lily first.

Always Lily first.

“Come here, sweetheart.”

She ran straight into his arms.

And the moment he held her, he knew one thing with absolute certainty:

May you like

Whatever happened next, Nora would never again stand between him and his daughter.
