Chapter 1 - The Secret Owen Shouted Across the Lawn

The golf ball was already rolling when Wade decided to turn a family afternoon into something else.
We were gathered on the lawn behind the villa, where the grass was cut like velvet and sunlight flashed across polished club heads on the nearby golf rack. Owen, my seven-year-old son, had just sent his ball drifting harmlessly across the green.
Wade stepped into its path.
He could have let it roll.
Instead, he swung.
Hard.
The club struck the ball with a sharp crack.
It shot straight toward Owen.
The ball hit my son in the face.
Owen fell backward onto the grass and immediately burst into tears.
There was no blood, no serious injury—just a rapidly reddening cheek and a terrified little boy trying to understand why an adult he trusted had done that to him.
I was stepping out from the seating area when I heard Maren scream.
My nine-year-old daughter pointed directly at Wade.
“DAD — HE HIT OWEN IN THE FACE WITH THE BALL!”
Everything inside me hardened.
I crossed the lawn before Wade could offer a single excuse.
My right fist struck him once across the face.
WHACK.
Wade went down.
“YOU HURT MY SON?”
He scrambled up almost immediately.
Instead of backing away, he lunged.
His fist struck my face.
I fell backward onto the grass.
Wade stood over me, breathing hard.
Then Owen shouted from behind us.
“DAD! HE KNOWS I SAW HIM WITH MOM...”
I stopped.
For one second, I thought I had misunderstood.
I looked at Owen.
Then Wade.
And something in Wade’s face confirmed the part my mind was still refusing to accept.
I surged to my feet.
My front kick struck Wade squarely in the chest.
He flew backward into the golf rack.
CRASH.
Balls scattered.
Lightweight gear spilled across the grass.
Wade ended up slumped beside the collapsed rack.
I walked toward him.
“ARE YOU SLEEPING WITH MY WIFE?!”
Wade looked up at me.
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Terror had already answered for him.
And behind me, my seven-year-old son was still crying—not only because of the golf ball.
May you like
He had been carrying an adult secret alone.
