Chapter 14 - Wade Was No Longer “Uncle Wade”

The friendship did not survive.
There was no version where it could.
Wade had betrayed my marriage.
Then frightened my son to protect the betrayal.
The children never saw him privately again.
Legal restrictions and family boundaries handled that.
I did not need to hunt him down.
Did not destroy his property.
Did not spend my life planning revenge.
Distance became the punishment that mattered most.
For Wade, losing our friendship meant losing the family he had spent years pretending to be part of.
For Owen, removing Wade meant learning something healthier:
An adult does not retain access to you simply because adults once called him family.
Adrienne and I separated.
Months later, we began divorce proceedings.
Not because Owen told me.
Not because one golf afternoon became too dramatic.
Because seven months of deception had destroyed the basic conditions required for the marriage to continue.
Adrienne remained the children’s mother.
Her affair did not erase that.
But trust and custody arrangements changed because of the way she involved Owen in secrecy and failed to protect him from Wade afterward.
Nothing became magically simple.
It became structured.
May you like
And structure was better than pretending.
