Chapter 11 - Owen Thought He Had Broken Our Marriage

The hardest conversation happened three nights later.
Owen came into the guest room where I was staying with the children.
He climbed beside me.
Then asked:
“Is Mom leaving because I told you?”
I felt something inside me break.
“No.”
“But she’s not here.”
“That’s because Mom and I have grown-up problems we have to handle.”
“Because I saw them.”
“No.”
His eyes filled.
“If I didn’t see them, you’d still be together.”
That was logically possible.
And completely wrong emotionally.
I turned toward him.
“Owen, listen carefully. You did not create what you saw.”
He stared at me.
“Mom and Wade made choices before you ever walked into that guesthouse.”
“But I told.”
“You told the truth.”
He began crying.
“Wade said families break.”
I pulled him against me.
“Secrets can hurt families. Truth tells us what was already wrong.”
He held onto my shirt.
I wished I had answered him Tuesday.
I wished I had covered my laptop, ended the call, and said:
I’m listening.
I could not undo that.
May you like
But I could make sure “later” never became my automatic answer again.
