Chapter 4 - Wade Turned the Secret Into a Threat

Adrienne apparently thought she had bought herself time.
Wade took it further.
The next afternoon, he found Owen alone near the villa garage.
He crouched in front of him and asked:
“You haven’t said anything to your dad, right?”
Owen refused to answer.
Wade smiled.
But Owen remembered something about that smile.
“It wasn’t his normal smile.”
“What did he say?”
Owen swallowed.
“He said grown-up stuff can break families.”
My hands clenched.
“And then?”
“He said if I told you, Mom might have to leave.”
There it was.
Wade had put the responsibility for our marriage onto a seven-year-old.
Tell the truth—
and lose your mother.
Stay quiet—
and keep the family together.
Owen had spent the next several days terrified that anything he said might make Adrienne disappear.
Then came the golf gathering.
Wade saw Owen trying repeatedly to stay close to me.
At one point, Owen took my hand and said:
“Dad, can we go somewhere alone?”
Wade heard him.
Ten minutes later—
the ball hit Owen in the face.
I asked my son:
“Did Wade say anything before he hit it?”
Owen nodded.
Very quietly:
“He said, ‘Thought we understood each other.’”
The golf shot was not random cruelty.
It was escalation.
Wade had threatened him emotionally.
When that failed—
May you like
he frightened him physically.
