Chapter 9 - Wade Finally Admitted Why He Wanted Owen Afraid
The admission came during a recorded interview with attorneys present.
Wade was asked:
“Did Owen’s knowledge of the affair influence your behavior at the golf gathering?”
Long silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
“Did you intend to seriously injure him?”
“No.”
I believed that.
That mattered too.
The ball could have caused far worse harm, but Wade said he had intended to “scare him.”
As if that improved much.
“Why?”
His answer was ugly because it was so selfish.
“I thought if Beckett found out, I’d lose everything.”
“What exactly?”
“My best friend.”
The affair.
His marriage.
Our social circle.
The business referrals we shared.
His standing with people who had trusted him for two decades.
Wade had spent seven months risking all of it.
Then once a child discovered the truth—
he tried to make the child responsible for protecting the consequences.
He said:
“I panicked.”
I eventually read that line in the transcript.
People use panic like it arrives from nowhere.
But Wade’s panic had a history.
