Chapter 3 - Owen Saw Them in the Guesthouse

My wife’s name was Adrienne.
We had been married eleven years.
Wade had stood beside me at our wedding.
He held Maren the day she was born.
He was one of the first people at the hospital when Owen arrived seven years later.
Our children called him Uncle Wade even though there was no blood between us.
That was why Owen didn’t understand what he saw at first.
The previous Monday, he had gone looking for his baseball glove.
Adrienne sometimes stored sports equipment in the villa’s detached guesthouse.
The door was partly open.
Owen walked in.
He heard his mother laughing upstairs.
Then Wade’s voice.
Owen climbed three steps before seeing them through the open landing.
They were kissing.
Not a greeting.
Not a mistake a child could easily misread.
Wade had his hands around Adrienne’s waist.
Adrienne was touching his face.
Owen froze.
Then a floorboard creaked.
Wade looked directly at him.
According to Owen, Wade immediately stepped away.
Adrienne ran toward the stairs.
“Owen, wait.”
He ran.
What happened next mattered almost as much as the affair itself.
Adrienne caught him outside.
She knelt and told him:
“You didn’t see what you think you saw.”
Owen said:
“You were kissing Uncle Wade.”
Adrienne became frightened.
Then she made the worst possible choice.
She said:
“Please don’t tell Dad yet.”
Not never.
Yet.
Adults use small words to make terrible requests sound temporary.
To a seven-year-old, it still meant:
May you like
Keep the secret.
