Chapter 4 - THE PREGNANCY I NEVER KNEW ABOUT

I did not remember being pregnant.

I remembered bleeding.

Pain.

A call to the clinic.

A nurse telling me the hormones were “adjusting.”

That was all.

Now Hart claimed I had lost a pregnancy no one told me existed.

Julian looked destroyed.

“You knew?”

He asked Fiona.

She shook her head too fast.

“No.”

Hart said:

“She accessed the result.”

Fiona spun.

“You don’t know that.”

“We have audit logs.”

There.

Digital evidence.

Not memory.

Not accusation.

Logs.

Julian stared at her.

“Why?”

“I didn’t do anything.”

Hart said:

“You printed the result.”

She shouted:

“I was doing my job.”

Then:

“And it was barely a pregnancy.”

The ballroom inhaled.

I went cold.

Only someone who had seen the result could minimize it that precisely.

Julian whispered:

“You did know.”

Fiona realized.

Too late.

She sat down.

Her father stood.

“This is enough.”

Gordon Blake.

Tall.

Controlled.

Powerful.

He addressed security.

“Remove Elena.”

I laughed.

“My medical records are being discussed and I’m the one leaving?”

He looked at Julian.

“This woman is manipulating you.”

Julian stared.

“She was my wife.”

“Exactly.”

Gordon’s contempt made the hierarchy clear.

Elena the ex-wife.

Fiona the future.

Except the future was cracking.

Then Nora texted me.

UNKNOWN NUMBER IDENTIFIED.

I opened it.

The number that had warned me traced to a prepaid phone activated by a clinic employee.

Name:

Maya Hart.

Dr. Hart’s daughter.

I looked at him.

“Who is Maya?”

His face changed.

Fiona whispered:

“No.”

Hart closed his eyes.

“My daughter.”

“What does she know?”

“Everything.”

Then another message from the unknown number arrived.

ASK FIONA WHY SHE IS REALLY PREGNANT.

I looked at Fiona’s belly.

She instinctively covered it.

Julian followed my gaze.

“What does that mean?”

May you like

No one answered.

Not yet.
