Chapter 1 - The Papers That Fell From Ellie’s Box

The stuffed rabbit’s head came off in Celina’s hands.
Not by accident.
Not because the toy was old.
She gripped it with both hands and pulled until the stitching at the neck split apart.
RIP.
White stuffing burst across the polished marble floor of the Moretti estate.
Six-year-old Ellie stared at what remained of the rabbit she had slept with since she was two.
Then Celina threw both pieces down.
Her silver wedding dress caught the chandelier light as she stepped forward and ground one heel deliberately into the torn toy.
“AFTER THE WEDDING, YOU HAVE TO LEAVE.”
Ellie broke into loud sobs.
The pre-wedding reception continued around them in stunned silence. Serving staff froze beside trays. Floral arrangements lined the main hall. Framed Moretti family photographs covered the display shelf behind Celina.
And several white boxes containing Ellie’s clothes and toys were already sitting near the staircase.
Proof that Celina had not invented the threat in anger.
She had prepared for it.
Then Luciano Moretti entered.
Forty-two.
Dark hair.
Charcoal-gray three-piece suit.
He had been meeting privately with two family advisers in another wing and had no idea Ellie’s belongings were being packed.
The moment she saw him, Ellie ran.
“Daddy!”
She crashed into his waist and wrapped both arms around him.
Luciano looked down at her tear-covered face.
Then at the destroyed rabbit.
Then at Celina.
Ellie sobbed against his suit.
“DADDY... WHEN DO I HAVE TO LEAVE?”
Luciano became very still.
His eyes lifted toward Celina.
Before he could speak, Marianne Moretti stepped forward.
Luciano’s sixty-four-year-old aunt had been standing near the staircase holding one of the white boxes.
Her expression was grim.
“CELINA HAS CLEARED OUT ELLIE’S ROOM.”
Luciano looked at the box.
Inside were folded dresses.
Shoes.
Books.
A framed photograph.
Toys.
His daughter’s life packed for removal before his wedding had even happened.
Ellie stayed locked around him.
Celina saw Luciano’s expression change.
And panicked.
She crossed the space quickly, grabbed the white box from Marianne, and hurled it toward him.
Luciano swatted it aside.
The box hit the marble.
Everything spilled out.
Clothes.
Toys.
Papers.
Celina lunged toward him.
Luciano caught her wrist.
Then shoved her backward hard.
She crashed into the Moretti family photo display.
CRASH.
Frames hit the marble.
Glass shattered.
Photographs scattered everywhere.
Celina remained stunned amid the broken pictures.
No second shove.
No further strike.
Luciano’s eyes dropped to the necklace at her throat.
The Moretti clan necklace.
A heavy heirloom reserved by family tradition for the acknowledged head of the household—or someone formally entrusted to stand beside them.
Celina had insisted on wearing it before the wedding.
Luciano had allowed it.
Now he crossed toward her.
Celina raised a hand.
“Luciano—”
He took the necklace in one decisive motion and tore it free without injuring her neck.
RIP.
The clasp broke.
He dropped the heirloom onto the shattered family photographs.
CLINK.
Celina went deathly pale.
Then Luciano noticed something among Ellie’s scattered clothes.
A file.
It had fallen open.
He bent down and picked it up.
Two documents sat inside.
The first was a relocation authorization involving Ellie.
At the bottom was Luciano Moretti’s signature.
Except Luciano had never signed it.
He knew his own hand.
This was a forgery.
Then he turned to the second document.
His expression changed completely.
It concerned Ellie’s biological mother.
A woman whose name had not been spoken openly inside the Moretti house for years.
Luciano slowly raised his eyes toward Celina.
His voice became ice.
“Why is Ellie’s mother involved in this?!”
Celina froze.
Her face emptied of arrogance.
Fear took its place.
She said nothing.
Ellie remained safely behind her father.
The Moretti heirloom lay among shattered family photographs.
And Luciano suddenly understood that Celina had not merely been trying to remove his daughter after the wedding.
She had built some kind of plan around Ellie’s mother.
A plan that required forging Luciano’s name.
And judging by the terror on Celina’s face—
May you like
the truth was far worse than clearing out a bedroom.
