Chapter 6 - Grace’s Goodbye Letter Was Not Written the Day She Left
Forensic document review turned the old goodbye letter into the next fracture.
The handwriting was Grace’s.
That much seemed genuine.
But the paper told another story.
The letter had been written on stationery from a boutique inn in Vermont.
Luciano and Grace stayed there once.
Three years before Ellie was born.
The hotel changed branding before Grace disappeared and no longer used that stationery.
Not impossible.
Grace could have kept a sheet.
Then investigators found something more important.
The ink contained two different formulations.
Most of the body was written with one pen.
The final lines—
Please don’t make this harder by looking for me. Let her grow up believing I loved her enough to leave.
—used another.
Microscopic analysis suggested those lines had been added later.
Same handwriting?
Probably.
But copied slowly.
Possibly traced from samples.
Even the word spacing changed.
The goodbye letter had likely been altered.
Luciano sat with his head in his hands when the report arrived.
The object he had built five years of grief around might have been manipulated.
He remembered hating Grace for parts of it.
Then feeling guilty for hating her.
Then defending her to Ellie despite believing she had abandoned them.
All while someone else may have written the ending for her.
The question became brutally simple.
