Chapter 2 - Ellie Thought Her Mother Had Chosen to Leave
Ellie’s biological mother was named Grace Whitmore.
For almost five years, Ellie had been told the same simple story about her.
Grace loved her.
Grace became sick after a difficult period following the birth.
Grace eventually left because she believed Luciano could provide Ellie a more stable life.
That was the version Luciano himself believed.
Not because Grace told him directly.
Because of one letter.
Ellie was fourteen months old when Grace disappeared from the Moretti house.
Luciano returned from a business trip and found half of Grace’s clothes gone.
Her car was missing.
Her passport too.
On his desk sat an envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Luciano,
I cannot do this anymore. Ellie deserves stability I am not capable of giving her. Please don’t make this harder by looking for me. Let her grow up believing I loved her enough to leave.
Grace
Luciano had spent months trying to find her anyway.
Private investigators.
Friends.
Old employers.
Hospitals.
Banks.
Nothing.
Grace’s phone eventually went inactive.
Her credit history went silent.
Her family claimed she had cut contact with them too.
Finally Luciano accepted what seemed impossible:
Grace had chosen disappearance.
He never told Ellie that her mother abandoned her.
He used gentler words.
“She wasn’t well.”
“She needed to go away.”
“She loved you.”
But children fill empty spaces themselves.
At four, Ellie asked:
“Did Mommy leave because I cried?”
At five:
“Was I too hard?”
Every time, Luciano said no.
Then Celina entered their lives.
At first she seemed almost perfect with Ellie.
Patient.
Warm.
Attentive.
She helped brush her hair.
Picked dresses.
Attended preschool events.
Then Luciano proposed.
Something changed.
Celina stopped speaking about Grace kindly.
She began saying:
“Some women just aren’t made to be mothers.”
Or:
“You’re lucky Luciano had someone responsible step in.”
Ellie heard.
Luciano corrected Celina twice.
Not firmly enough.
He thought it was insecurity.
He never imagined Celina possessed actual documents connected to Grace.
