Chapter 14 - Natalie’s Letter Gave Me One Last Instruction
The archive box contained another envelope I had initially overlooked.
Smaller.
Marked:
For Lila someday.
I did not open it.
It belonged to her.
Instead, I placed it with Natalie’s other letters in a secure family archive.
The pendant went there too.
Not as evidence anymore.
As history.
Before sealing the box, I reread the final paragraph of Natalie’s letter to me.
If Bianca ever comes near our family, don’t teach Lila to hate her for me. Just make sure our daughter grows up knowing that another person’s shame is never her responsibility to carry.
That was Natalie.
Even frightened, she thought about the emotional burden somebody might leave on her child.
Bianca had done exactly the opposite.
She attacked Lila because a toddler accidentally picked up something connected to an adult secret.
Natalie’s last instruction gave me the principle I needed:
Adult history belongs to adults.
