Chapter 8 - Natalie Had Seen Bianca Watching Our Family
The letter was dated six months before Natalie died.
It began simply.
Caleb, I hope you never need this.
Natalie explained that she had seen Bianca twice during the previous year.
Once outside a restaurant.
Once across the street from the pediatric clinic after one of Lila’s early appointments.
Bianca never approached.
Natalie initially assumed coincidence.
Then an old colleague contacted her.
Bianca had been asking questions.
Was Natalie still married?
Where did she live?
Had the old business documents been destroyed?
Did anyone know whether Natalie kept the settlement agreement?
Natalie became uneasy.
She did not tell me because my job already had me traveling constantly and she feared I would overreact to something that might be nothing.
That sentence hurt.
Then came the line that changed the meaning of my entire relationship with Bianca.
If she ever introduces herself to you as though you have never heard of her, do not believe it is an accident.
I put the letter down.
Bianca had not wandered into my life unaware.
At minimum, she knew exactly who I was before we met.
That did not prove every part of our relationship had been fake.
But it proved the first moment was.
