Chapter 12 - LAUREN’S TESTIMONY

Lauren’s testimony was brutal.

For Ryan.

For Victoria.

For herself.

She admitted she knew Ryan was married.

Admitted she enjoyed humiliating me.

Admitted Victoria encouraged the affair.

Admitted accepting gifts.

Then she said something unexpected.

“I thought Mariana was weak.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because she stayed.”

That sentence hurt.

Not because I believed it.

Because many people do.

Staying gets mistaken for weakness.

Leaving gets treated as proof abuse was real.

Life is not that clean.

Lauren continued.

“I understand now she was trying to survive a system I didn’t see.”

That did not make us friends.

It made her honest.

Then prosecutors showed messages where Victoria instructed Lauren to provoke me publicly.

One line:

Make her feel replaceable.

Another:

Ryan behaves when Mariana is insecure.

The affair was not only betrayal.

It was psychological leverage.

Lauren cried when she read it.

She had thought she was chosen.

She had also been used.

Again, both things could be true.

After court, she approached me.

“I’m sorry.”

I said:

“I believe you.”

She looked relieved.

Then I added:

“That doesn’t mean I forgive you.”

Her face changed.

Good.

Apology is not a transaction.

She nodded.

May you like

“I understand.”

Maybe she did.
