Chapter 19 - THE DINNER I CHOSE

On my forty-second birthday, I hosted dinner.

Long table.

White cloth.

Flowers.

Glassware.

Bright daylight.

The setup was close enough to the old dining room that I noticed immediately.

My body noticed too.

Small tension.

Then release.

Different people.

Different power.

Dana came.

Priya.

Helen.

My business partners.

My sister.

No Ryan.

No Victoria.

No Lauren.

Not because I hated them.

Because this table was mine to choose.

Someone brought soup.

I laughed.

“No bowls near me.”

Everyone stared.

Then I explained the joke.

The room laughed with me.

Humor returned the object to ordinary life.

That mattered.

After dinner, I found one preserved photo from my first wedding.

Ryan and me.

Flowers.

Perfect smiles.

I looked at it.

Then put it back.

Not destroyed.

Not displayed.

History.

Just history.

The marriage had happened.

So had the harm.

May you like

So had my life after it.

None erased the others.
