Chapter 2 - THE SLAP, THE FLOWERS, AND THE FIRST CRACK

I did not kneel.

That was the moment the evening stopped being a performance and became a war.

Ryan’s hand stayed pointed toward the floor.

His face had the look I knew too well.

Not drunken rage.

Control slipping.

That was when he became most dangerous.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Do what your husband tells you.”

I turned toward her.

“No.”

Her hand came up.

One clean swing.

The slap cracked across my face.

My head snapped sideways.

I caught myself on the edge of the table.

Then slowly turned back.

Victoria’s expression was almost serene.

“Your husband replaced you. Learn your place.”

Lauren smiled.

That smile did something the slap could not.

It clarified everything.

She walked to the floral arrangement beside my chair.

Not just flowers.

My wedding bouquet had been preserved and re-created for our fifth anniversary dinner.

A sentimental gesture, Ryan claimed.

Now Lauren picked it up.

Dropped it to the floor.

Then crushed the flowers beneath her heel.

“Even your marriage belongs to me now.”

I looked down.

White petals.

Pink roses.

Broken stems.

For years, I had tried to protect the symbol.

The marriage.

The home.

The family image.

Suddenly, it looked ridiculous.

Ryan reached for the large serving bowl.

He lifted it toward me.

Threatening.

I moved first.

I seized the bowl from his hands.

He froze.

The shock on his face was almost comical.

He had expected resistance eventually.

Not physical certainty.

I turned toward him.

Then threw the soup across his face and chest.

One decisive motion.

He staggered backward.

The room went dead silent.

I set the empty bowl down.

“You should’ve remembered whose money built this family.”

Victoria’s rage disappeared.

Lauren slowly lifted her heel from the crushed flowers.

Ryan wiped his face.

“What the hell does that mean?”

I smiled.

Small.

Cold.

Then reached into my handbag.

Not for the documents.

Not yet.

For my phone.

I opened the transfer history.

“Fourteen point eight million dollars.”

Ryan stared.

Victoria went pale.

I looked at her.

“Recognize the number?”

No one answered.

I continued.

“Five years ago, Cole Family Holdings received a capital injection for exactly fourteen point eight million.”

Ryan’s eyes moved to his mother.

“Mom?”

Victoria said nothing.

“Funding source,” I said, “Mariana Vega Family Trust.”

Lauren looked confused.

Good.

She had been invited into a game without knowing the rules.

Ryan shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

“Is it?”

“My family had money before you.”

“Some.”

Victoria snapped:

“Stop this.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“You don’t understand the structure.”

“Then explain it.”

She did not.

I pulled out the copy of page 17.

Ryan took one step closer.

“Where did you get that?”

“That’s your question?”

“It’s confidential.”

“It has my name on it.”

Victoria moved toward me.

“You stole internal documents.”

I laughed.

“My own trust documents?”

Ryan looked at her.

“Mom, what is she talking about?”

The room changed again.

He genuinely did not know.

Not all of it.

That mattered.

Victoria turned to him.

“Sit down.”

“No.”

Her son had finally used the word she hated.

“No.”

Lauren stepped backward.

For the first time, she looked like an outsider.

I took out page 24.

“Marital Control Contingency.”

Ryan read the heading.

His face drained.

“What is that?”

I watched Victoria.

She was finished pretending.

“A protective mechanism.”

“For who?” I asked.

“For the family.”

“Meaning you.”

“For all of us.”

“No.”

I held up the unsigned proxy.

“It gives Ryan control over assets that came from my trust.”

Ryan looked at the page.

Then at his mother.

“You told me that was a tax consent.”

Victoria’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

He knew about the document.

Not the purpose.

Complicity had layers.

I would learn that slowly.

Lauren picked up her purse.

“I think I should go.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

She froze.

“You wanted my place.”

I pointed to the chair.

“Sit in it.”

Ryan snapped:

“Mariana.”

I ignored him.

“Sit.”

Lauren sat.

For once, not smug.

Then my phone vibrated.

UNKNOWN NUMBER.

DO NOT LET VICTORIA DESTROY THE BLUE LEDGER.

I stopped.

Blue ledger.

No document in my bag mentioned it.

I looked at Victoria.

Her eyes dropped to my phone.

She knew.

“What is the blue ledger?”

The question hit harder than the soup.

Victoria’s face changed completely.

Ryan saw it.

“Mom?”

May you like

She stepped back.

And for the first time in my marriage, the woman who controlled everyone in the room looked afraid.
