Chapter 17 - RYAN AFTER PRISON

Years later, Dana told me Ryan had completed his sentence.

He worked at a small logistics firm.

No executive title.

No family office.

No public redemption campaign.

Good.

He sent one letter.

I opened it.

Mariana,

I used to think the worst thing I did was the night I grabbed you and told you to kneel.

It wasn’t.

The worst thing was needing you to feel small so I could avoid admitting how dependent I was on you.

I stopped.

That was enough.

He continued.

I knew you had power before you did. Instead of telling you, I punished you for it.

Accurate.

He did not ask forgiveness.

Also good.

I did not reply.

Closure did not require correspondence.

His growth, if real, belonged to him.

My life no longer needed to be the mirror he used to measure himself.
