Chapter 10 - The Text Message Explained the Dinner

The strongest evidence emerged months later during formal discovery.

A message exchange between Daniel and Margaret.

The afternoon of the dinner.

Margaret:

Are you still going through with tonight?

Daniel:

Yes.

Margaret:

Then don’t back down when she starts.

Daniel:

I need people to see how she gets.

Margaret:

She’ll lose control if you push the Noah issue.

Daniel:

I know.

Claire stared at the final message.

I know.

Daniel had known how to destabilize her.

Use their son.

Question her parenting.

Crowd her physically.

Let Margaret humiliate her.

He could not have predicted exactly what Claire would do.

But he hoped for an outburst.

That mattered.

Then Claire read a later message, sent after she left.

Daniel:

That was worse than I expected.

Margaret:

Better for you.

Daniel:

I hit her first.

A five-minute gap.

Then Margaret:

People will remember the table.

Claire stopped reading.

That sentence told her everything about Margaret.

Not concern that Daniel struck his wife.

Strategy.

Narrative.

May you like

People will remember the table.
