Chapter 11 - Claire Refused to Pretend the Table Flip Was Fine
Claire’s lawyer told her not to minimize what she did.
So she didn’t.
During the custody evaluation, Claire said:
“I slapped Margaret.”
“Why?”
“I was furious.”
“Was Margaret physically attacking you?”
“No.”
“And the table?”
“I flipped it.”
“Were people seated?”
“Yes.”
“Could somebody have been hurt?”
“Yes.”
Claire swallowed.
“No one was, but yes.”
“Do you regret it?”
“Yes.”
The evaluator looked surprised.
Claire continued.
“I don’t regret leaving. I regret losing control before I did.”
That distinction became central to Claire’s recovery.
Daniel’s violence did not make every act of retaliation healthy.
Margaret’s manipulation did not make overturning furniture a good model for Noah.
Claire told the truth.
She had been provoked.
She had also reacted badly.
Both could exist at once.
