Chapter 12 - Daniel Finally Had to Answer One Simple Question
The custody evaluator asked Daniel:
“Why did you slap your wife?”
Daniel began with explanations.
Stress.
Escalation.
Claire yelling.
Family tension.
The evaluator interrupted.
“Why did you slap her?”
Daniel looked down.
“I lost my temper.”
“Did Claire physically strike you first?”
“No.”
“Was Noah present?”
“Yes.”
“Was he holding Claire?”
“Yes.”
“Then why does your custody intake describe Claire as the parent whose emotional control endangered Noah?”
Daniel had no good answer.
He tried:
“I was worried about her pattern.”
The evaluator replied:
“You were documenting hers while excusing yours.”
That sentence followed Daniel for months.
Because it was true.
He had turned Claire’s tears into evidence.
Her boundaries into hostility.
Her anger into instability.
Meanwhile, his own slap was categorized privately as:
I lost my temper.
