Chapter 13 - Margaret Blamed Claire Until Daniel Stopped Letting Her
Daniel did not transform overnight.
He remained defensive.
Angry.
Embarrassed.
For weeks, he continued telling himself Claire had “destroyed the family.”
Then therapy forced him to examine the role Margaret played in his life.
The first major break came when Margaret said:
“If you had controlled Claire earlier, none of this would have happened.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Controlled?”
“You know what I mean.”
“No. Say it.”
Margaret became irritated.
“You were too weak with her.”
For the first time, Daniel heard his mother the way Claire had heard her for eleven years.
Marriage as hierarchy.
Disagreement as disobedience.
Control as responsibility.
He said quietly:
“Mom, I slapped my wife.”
Margaret responded:
“And she overturned a table.”
There it was again.
Deflection.
Daniel finally said:
“I’m talking about what I did.”
Margaret walked out.
