Chapter 7 - Margaret’s Real Goal Was Not Money
Claire initially assumed there must be an inheritance angle.
There wasn’t.
That almost made the truth uglier.
Margaret wanted Noah.
Not legally for herself.
Emotionally.
She believed Dawson men should be raised inside the Dawson family structure.
Daniel had grown up under her control.
Private schools she chose.
Sports she chose.
Friends she approved.
Even at thirty-eight, he still called her before major household decisions.
Claire disrupted that.
She refused to let Margaret choose Noah’s school.
Refused to force him into competitive baseball when he preferred drawing.
Refused to make him hug relatives when uncomfortable.
Refused to let Margaret punish him.
Margaret did not see those decisions as parenting.
She saw them as Claire isolating Noah from his “real family.”
When Daniel began considering divorce, Margaret saw an opportunity.
If Daniel obtained primary custody, Noah remained mostly inside the Dawson world.
Claire became the visitor.
Margaret’s line at dinner was literal in her own mind.
Claire did not belong.
