Chapter 12 - The Birthday Party Was the Last Time Lenore Controlled the Room

Lenore had always relied on public pressure.

Family dinners.

Holidays.

Birthday parties.

She knew Callum hated embarrassing his mother in front of relatives.

That was why she chose Maisie’s birthday gathering to force the paternity claim into the open.

If Callum accepted the lie publicly, reversing himself later would become emotionally harder.

People would already know.

Questions would spread.

Brenna would look defensive.

Maisie would feel unwanted.

Then I arrived with the one thing Lenore could not manipulate:

a chain-of-custody test.

The physical envelope mattered less than the process behind it.

Identities confirmed.

Samples witnessed.

Sealed.

Tracked.

No mother-in-law collecting hair from brushes.

No swapped biological material.

No family member controlling submission.

For fourteen years, Lenore’s power had depended on being the person between Callum and the truth.

The legitimate DNA test removed her from the middle.

That was why a sealed envelope frightened her more than any argument ever had.
