Chapter 5 - Maisie Was Chained Because She Wouldn’t Repeat Lenore’s Lie
The police interviewed the adults separately.
Then a child specialist spoke gently with Maisie.
The story she told made me physically ill.
Earlier that afternoon, Lenore had taken Maisie onto the side porch while everyone else gathered around the cake.
She asked:
“Do you know why your father has been sad lately?”
Maisie said no.
Lenore told her:
“Because your mother lied to him.”
Then:
“Callum isn’t really your daddy.”
Maisie started crying.
She said:
“He is my daddy.”
Lenore told her to stop.
Maisie tried to run inside.
Lenore blocked her.
Then she wrapped the existing decorative security chain around the porch post and fastened it so Maisie could not leave the immediate area.
Not tight around the child’s body.
Not physically injuring her.
But enough to trap and frighten her.
Lenore told her:
“You can come back to the party when you admit the truth.”
Maisie refused.
So Lenore left her there.
That explained why my daughter had said:
I want to go home.
She was at her own house.
But Lenore had made it feel like she was the intruder.
The DNA accusation was not simply a lie told to Callum.
Lenore was trying to make Maisie accept it too.
Because if even the child repeated:
Callum isn’t my real dad,

the lie became easier to normalize.
