Chapter 11 - Victoria’s Slap Became Sophie’s Responsibility
Sophie had hit Victoria in public.
Open hand.
One strike.
Then turned away.
No prolonged attack.
Still wrong.
She met Victoria two months later in the presence of a mediator.
“I’m sorry I slapped you.”
Victoria nodded.
Then:
“You thought I was going to hit Elena.”
“I thought you were moving toward her aggressively.”
“I was.”
“That doesn’t mean I had to hit you.”
Correct.
Sophie continued.
“I could’ve blocked you. Called security. Moved Elena away.”
Victoria almost smiled.
“You sound like Nathan.”
“He’s annoying.”
The mediator allowed the small humor.
Then Victoria apologized for throwing water.
First attempt had been:
“I regret losing my temper.”
Rejected.
Second:
“I threw water into Elena’s face to humiliate her and make her leave before Sophie recognized her.”
Specific.
Then:
“I called her disgusting and a servant because I believed attacking her social position would make Sophie less likely to identify with her.”
That one hurt.
Then:
“I was wrong.”
Elena read the written apology separately.
She did not attend the mediation.
Her response:
You knew exactly what you were doing. I appreciate that you finally described it accurately. I do not want contact.
Victoria respected:

Then Nathan’s relationship with his mother.
He continued seeing her.
Less often.
With clearer limits.
Sophie sometimes joined.
Sometimes not.
No forced family healing.
Then Victoria entered therapy.
Why had she needed control so badly?
Her own mother died when Victoria was thirteen.
Her father remarried quickly.
The stepfamily collapsed.
Victoria learned to treat stability as something adults had to engineer.
Again:
explanation.
Not excuse.
She had looked at Sophie’s adoption history through her own fear.
Then years of concealment turned “protection” into:
ownership of information.
That was the deeper violation.
She decided Sophie could not handle the truth.
