Chapter 13 - Sophie and Elena Had Their First Real Fight Over Nothing Important

It happened over Christmas.

Which was perfect.

Elena wanted Sophie to spend Christmas Eve with her.

Sophie had already promised Michael Bennett.

“He’s my dad.”

“I know.”

“You say that like you don’t.”

Elena became defensive.

“I spent twenty-four Christmases without you.”

Sophie’s expression hardened.

“That isn’t my fault.”

Silence.

Elena immediately regretted the argument.

Still angry.

“You always choose them.”

There.

The dangerous sentence.

Sophie stared.

“The people who raised me?”

Elena heard herself.

This was the same loyalty test every adult before them had created.

Rebecca versus Grace.

Reed versus Bennett.

Biological versus adoptive.

Elena started crying.

“I’m sorry.”

Sophie did not instantly comfort her.

Good.

“I need you to stop treating my parents like the reason you lost me.”

Elena nodded.

“They aren’t.”

“Grace is my mother.”

“I know.”

“And Rebecca is my mother too.”

“Yes.”

“And Michael is my father.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re my sister.”

Elena smiled weakly.

“I’m getting there.”

Then practical solution.

Christmas Eve with Michael.

Christmas Day afternoon with Elena.

No one “won.”

Later Elena admitted in therapy she had expected biological connection to feel more immediately powerful than adoption.

That belief had shamed:

her.

Sophie admitted she sometimes minimized Elena’s grief because acknowledging it made her feel responsible.

Both adjusted.

Then the sisters developed ordinary irritations.

Elena arrived late.

Sophie planned everything obsessively.

Elena hated Nathan’s taste in music.

Sophie thought Elena’s apartment plants were a public-health threat.

Good.

The relationship gained weight by accumulating things unrelated to separation.

That was how strangers became sisters again.

Not one photograph.

Repeated ordinary contact.
