Chapter 9 - The Wedding Became a Choice Instead of an Emergency
Nathan Grant loved Sophie.
He also loved his mother.
That became difficult.
Victoria expected him to defend her.
Sophie expected him not to excuse her.
Nathan initially did something unhelpful.
He tried to mediate too quickly.
“Mom thought she was protecting you.”
Sophie stared.
Nathan immediately knew.
“That came out wrong.”
“Yes.”
Then he corrected.
“Her motive may explain the first decision. It doesn’t justify the next twenty years.”
Better.
Then Victoria called repeatedly.
Nathan stopped answering for several days.
Not permanent estrangement.
Space.
Then the wedding.
They had already paid deposits.
Guests flew from multiple states.
Venue available.
Could reschedule in six weeks.
Victoria wanted exactly that.
“Do not let this ruin your future.”
Sophie hated the implication that Elena was:

Nathan asked Sophie:
“What do you want?”
She surprised him.
“I still want to marry you.”
“Now?”
“No.”
Good.
She did not want the wedding to become proof that Victoria failed to stop them.
Nor proof Elena restored something.
Marriage needed to return to:
Nathan and Sophie.
So they postponed six months.
During those months Sophie and Elena met gradually.
Coffee.
Dinner.
A museum.
One terrible weekend trip they planned too early.
Elena expected immediate intimacy.
Sophie needed space.
They fought.
Real sisters.
Then Nathan and Sophie attended couples counseling.
Not because their relationship was broken.
Because his mother had become part of their marriage before it started.
They built boundaries.
Victoria could attend future wedding only if Sophie wanted.
Nathan would not use Sophie to communicate with his mother.
Sophie would not demand Nathan sever every relationship as proof of loyalty.
Then Sophie decided:
Victoria could attend.
Why?
Not forgiveness.
Because Sophie did not want a wedding structured around excluding someone in retaliation.
Conditions:
No speech.
No involvement in planning.
No direct contact with Elena unless Elena initiated.
Victoria agreed.
Then actually followed:
them.
