Chapter 4 - Victoria Was Not Part of the Adoption
Victoria Grant did not adopt Sophie.
Did not work for child services.
Did not control Rebecca’s custody case.
That mattered.
Her involvement began later.
Grace Bennett and Victoria Grant had been close friends for years.
They served together on a hospital fundraising board in Boston.
When Grace and Michael began adopting Sophie, Victoria knew.
She met Sophie several times as a child.
That explained something Sophie suddenly remembered.
A silver-haired woman at holiday parties.
Always elegant.
Always telling Grace:
“She looks exactly like she belongs with you.”
Sophie had never connected the younger Victoria with her future mother-in-law.
Why would she?
Twenty-four years.
Different context.
Then Rebecca.
The adoption agency routed letters through Grace and Michael according to the contact agreement.
For years, Grace shared them.
Sophie received birthday cards marked only:
From Rebecca.
Grace explained that Rebecca was her birth mother.
Sophie was too young to understand much more.
Then Grace became sick.
Breast cancer.
Sophie was eleven.
Michael struggled with work, medical appointments, and parenting.
Victoria helped.
She drove Sophie to school.
Coordinated meals.
Picked up mail from the Bennett house during hospital stays.
Then one letter arrived from Rebecca.
It was not routine.
Rebecca wrote that Dorothy had died.
Elena, then thirteen, now lived with Rebecca again.
Rebecca wanted the sisters to resume contact.
She asked for one supervised meeting.
Grace was undergoing chemotherapy.
Michael was emotionally overwhelmed.
Victoria opened the letter because Grace had previously asked her to sort household correspondence.
That authorization was broad.
Maybe too broad.
Victoria read it.
Then put it aside.
Why?
Her first explanation years later was:
“Grace was dying.”
The letter felt like another emotional crisis Sophie did not need.
Maybe understandable.
Then Grace died six weeks later.
Michael became Sophie’s sole adoptive parent.
Rebecca wrote again.
Victoria helped manage memorial correspondence.
She intercepted that letter too.
This time there was no medical emergency.
Only Victoria’s judgment.
She told herself Sophie needed to stabilize with Michael.
Then another year passed.
Rebecca tried through the agency.
The agency had closed.
Records moved.
The Bennetts had changed addresses.
Contact became harder.
Then Michael Bennett remarried.
Eventually told Sophie she could search when older.
He did not know Rebecca had written during Grace’s illness.
Because Victoria never gave him the letters.
That was the secret.
Not kidnapping.
Not illegal adoption.
A family friend with too much access deciding which truth a grieving child should receive.
Then decades later, Sophie began dating Nathan Grant.
Victoria recognized her surname.
Then her face.
She knew exactly who Sophie was.
And she said:
