Chapter 12 - Sophie Finally Read Rebecca’s Last Letter

Elena gave Sophie the blue-ribbon box six months after they met.

Not on the first day.

Not as emotional evidence.

When Sophie asked.

They sat at Elena’s apartment.

No wedding dress.

No wealthy venue.

Chinese takeout between them.

Sophie opened the final letter.

Rebecca wrote it eight months before she died.

Dear Sophie,

You may never read this. That is something I have finally learned to accept without pretending it is what I wanted.

Sophie stopped.

Then continued.

Rebecca did not accuse Grace and Michael.

She thanked them.

Specifically.

They gave you stability during the years when my own body and mind could not promise it. Whatever grief I carry does not cancel what they gave you.

Sophie cried.

Then:

I made mistakes too. I rejected supervised visits because I felt humiliated. I told myself dignity required being treated like a full mother immediately, even when you barely remembered me. That cost us time.

Then Elena.

Your sister has spent too many years believing finding you will repair something in her. I keep telling her you are a person, not a missing puzzle piece. If she finds you, please do not become responsible for making her childhood make sense.

Elena looked away.

Rebecca knew her.

Then the final paragraph:

If you want us, we are here. If you do not, that does not mean you are ungrateful, confused, manipulated, or less mine. It means your life grew somewhere I could not follow. I hope it grew with love.

Sophie covered her mouth.

Grace had loved her.

Rebecca had loved her.

Neither required one to cancel the other.

Then Sophie asked:

“Did she know Victoria had hidden letters?”

Elena shook her head.

“She suspected something was failing in the contact chain. She never knew who.”

That saved Sophie from another simplified story.

Rebecca had not died believing one specific villain stole her child.

She died knowing systems, pride, illness, distance, and adult decisions had combined into something nobody repaired in time.

Then Sophie folded the letter carefully.

“I wish she were here.”

Elena nodded.

“Me too.”

No twist reversed death.

Some losses remain.

The sisters’ task was not to repair Rebecca’s life.

It was to decide what to do with:

May you like

theirs.
