Chapter 14 - The Second Wedding Had No Discovery Waiting on the Floor
Six months after the first wedding date, Sophie and Nathan returned to the cliffside venue.
Smaller guest list.
Same ocean.
Same glass walls.
Victoria attended.
She wore navy.
Not champagne.
Sophie noticed but did not ask if symbolism was intentional.
Elena attended as:
family.
Not staff.
She wore a dark-green dress and arrived twenty minutes late.
Sophie nearly killed her.
Normal.
Michael Bennett walked Sophie down the aisle.
At the front, Sophie paused.
Then turned.
Elena sat in the second row beside an empty chair holding a small framed photograph of Rebecca.
Another framed photograph of Grace sat on Sophie’s side of the front table later.
Two mothers.
No competition.
Victoria looked at both.
Said nothing.
Good.
Then ceremony.
No interruption.
No secret letters.
No guest rushing through doors.
Sophie married Nathan.
Afterward, Elena hugged her.
“You actually did it.”
“You sound surprised.”
“I’ve met your personality.”
Sophie laughed.
Then Victoria approached.
Elena stiffened.
Victoria stopped several feet away.
Did not close distance.
“Congratulations,” she said to Sophie.
“Thank you.”
Then she looked at Elena.
No apology repeated.
No forced reconciliation.
Only:
“I hope you have a good evening.”
Elena nodded once.
“You too.”
Enough.
Then photographs.
Photographer asked for siblings.
Sophie and Elena stood together.
For a second both became aware of the old instant photo.
Two girls.
Same pairing.
Different lives.
Elena whispered:
“Don’t cry.”
Sophie immediately cried.
The photographer laughed.
Took the picture.
Later they compared.
In the childhood photo, Sophie had one missing front tooth.
In the wedding photo, Elena had champagne in one hand and Sophie’s bouquet in the other.
Continuity without pretending nothing happened between.
That became the photograph Sophie framed.
Not the old evidence.
