Chapter 1 - the door that made margaret stop breathing

Warm late-afternoon light filled the Colorado alpine lodge atrium, turning the mountain view beyond the tall windows gold while long shadows stretched across dark timber floors.

Claire Morgan stood at the top of the broad staircase in a dark emerald satin dress.

Barefoot.

Frightened.

Her mother-in-law stood directly behind her.

Margaret Morgan looked immaculate in a black tailored dress, silver-gray hair pinned into a precise bun, pearl earrings catching the light.

One hand was clamped around Claire’s upper shoulder.

“YOU SHOULD’VE LEFT WHEN I TOLD YOU.”

Claire twisted.

“Let go of me.”

Margaret tightened her grip.

Claire tried to pull free.

Only after Margaret finished speaking did she shove.

Hard.

Directly forward.

Claire lost her footing.

As her body pitched toward the stairs, she reached backward instinctively.

Her fingers caught Margaret’s pearl necklace.

The strand snapped.

White pearls exploded across the landing.

Margaret jerked backward, one hand flying toward her bare neck.

Claire tumbled down the staircase.

Pearls bounced beside her.

One.

Then another.

Then dozens, scattering down the wooden steps as Claire struck the final stair and landed on her side near the bottom.

She cried out.

Margaret remained upstairs.

Watching.

Then Daniel Morgan ran into the atrium from the lower hallway.

“Claire!”

He sprinted toward her and dropped to one knee.

Claire was conscious.

Shaking.

Crying.

Daniel slid one arm beneath her shoulders and held her securely.

“What happened?”

Claire looked toward the staircase.

“SHE TRIED TO KILL ME.”

Daniel froze.

Slowly, he lifted his eyes.

Margaret was still standing at the upper landing.

Her pearl necklace was gone.

Loose pearls covered the stairs between them.

Margaret looked down without remorse.

“She slipped. Don’t be pathetic.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

He carefully helped Claire stand.

She remained pressed against his side, one arm around him for support.

He looked back up.

“YOU’RE A SICK BITCH.”

For the first time, Margaret’s confidence flickered.

Daniel saw it.

Then his rage changed.

Not softer.

Colder.

He kept Claire against him.

And said:

“YOU STILL DON’T KNOW WHO’S OUTSIDE, DO YOU?”

Margaret stopped moving.

Her face drained of color.

Daniel slowly turned his gaze toward the lodge’s heavy entrance doors.

The camera followed.

For one second, nothing happened.

Then—

the door moved.

Only a few inches.

A narrow strip of brilliant exterior light cut across the dark floor.

No person appeared.

No voice came through.

Margaret stared at the gap.

Her hand remained pressed against the place where her pearls had been.

And for the first time since Claire met her, Margaret Morgan looked genuinely afraid.

Not because Daniel had seen what happened on the stairs.

May you like

Because someone outside had apparently come to confirm why Margaret had been trying so desperately to make Claire leave.
