Chapter 2 - daniel had asked one person to come without telling margaret
Daniel had not expected violence.
That was important.
He had invited someone to the lodge because he wanted answers, not because he believed his mother might throw Claire down a staircase.
Her name was Evelyn Shaw.
For twenty-three years, Evelyn had worked as the personal administrator to Daniel’s late father, Richard Morgan.
Not a lawyer.
Not a trustee.
Not some mysterious keeper of a secret fortune.
She handled schedules, correspondence, household records, medical appointments, travel files, and the endless private logistics of a wealthy family.
When Richard died sixteen months earlier, Evelyn retired.
Margaret told everyone she had moved permanently to Arizona.
Daniel barely questioned it.
Then Claire found something strange.
Three weeks before the staircase incident, she was sorting old lodge storage because she and Daniel planned to convert part of the upper wing into a private residence.
Inside a locked document chest were several envelopes addressed to Daniel.
All from Evelyn.
None opened.
The earliest was dated two months after Richard’s death.
Daniel read them.
The first was simple.
I need to speak with you about instructions your father left regarding your marriage and the lodge. Please contact me directly.
The second was more urgent.
Daniel, I have reason to believe Margaret is giving you an incomplete version of what Richard asked us to preserve.
The third:
Claire should be present when we speak.
Daniel confronted his mother immediately.
Margaret laughed.
“Evelyn became confused after your father died.”
Daniel asked why the letters were in Margaret’s storage chest.
“She sent endless nonsense. I kept it because I didn’t know what else to do with it.”
Claire did not believe her.
Neither did Daniel.
They located Evelyn through an old retirement contact.
She was not in Arizona.
She lived forty minutes outside Denver.
And when Daniel called, she said something that changed the tone of everything.
“I have been trying to reach you for more than a year.”
Daniel asked why she stopped.
Evelyn answered:
“Because your mother’s attorney sent me a letter threatening legal action if I continued interfering in family affairs.”
Daniel had never authorized such a letter.
Neither had the family’s current attorney.
That was when he arranged the meeting.
At the lodge.
Late afternoon.
Claire would be there.
Margaret was not supposed to be.
But Margaret arrived early.
Saw Claire carrying documents.
Realized Evelyn was coming.
And suddenly told Claire she needed to leave the property before Daniel returned.
Claire refused.
