Chapter 13 - margaret finally admitted why claire frightened her
Margaret’s clearest explanation came during a mediated session months later.
Claire did not attend.
Daniel did.
He asked:
“Why her?”
Margaret looked genuinely confused.
“What?”
“Why did Claire become the enemy?”
Margaret gave the predictable answers.
“She disrespected me.”
“She turned you against the family.”
“She never wanted the lodge.”
Daniel waited.
Then said:
“Those are complaints. Why was she dangerous to you?”
Margaret went quiet.
Eventually:
“Because she didn’t need us.”
Daniel stared.
Margaret continued.
Claire had money of her own.
A career.
Her own family connections.
She could tell Margaret no without fearing financial consequences.
And Daniel listened to Claire more as the marriage matured.
Richard did too.
Margaret felt herself becoming optional.
“You were my son,” she said.
“I am still your son.”
“You built a life where I was no longer necessary.”
Daniel answered:
“That is what adult children do.”
Margaret flinched.
Then said something even more revealing.
“When your father started siding with her, I felt like she had taken my place in my own house.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Dad was setting boundaries.”
“To me it felt like replacement.”
There it was.
Margaret had treated boundaries as eviction.
Claire’s presence therefore felt like theft even when nothing legal or financial had been taken from her.
Richard’s memorandum made that feeling concrete.
It guaranteed Claire a place Margaret could not revoke.
So Margaret hid it.
When Evelyn returned to expose the truth, Margaret panicked.
Then Claire stood at the staircase and said the words Margaret could not tolerate.
Your husband made sure that wasn’t true.
Margaret admitted:
“I wanted her out of the house.”
Daniel waited.
She looked down.
“I pushed her.”
No excuse.
