Chapter 9 - margaret had already prepared a story about claire leaving
The most disturbing discovery came from Margaret’s emails.
Two weeks before the staircase incident, she wrote to several relatives:
Claire and Daniel may be spending much less time at the lodge going forward. Please don’t make a big issue of it. Claire has never really been comfortable here.
Claire had never said that.
Another message to the estate manager:
Begin planning for the east wing to return to general family use after Thanksgiving.
Daniel and Claire had planned to spend Christmas there.
Then Margaret emailed a close friend:
I think Claire is finally realizing she doesn’t belong in this environment.
The wording mattered.
Margaret was already telling people Claire’s departure was happening.
Before Claire had decided anything.
Before Richard’s memorandum resurfaced publicly.
Before Evelyn’s visit.
When confronted, Margaret said she simply expected Daniel and Claire to use their Denver apartment more.
But then investigators recovered a deleted draft message written the morning of the incident.
It was never sent.
Daniel is going to be devastated, but Claire has made her choice. I tried to prevent this.
No actual event had happened yet that Claire could be described as choosing.
The draft looked like preparation.
Not necessarily preparation for murder.
But preparation for a narrative in which Claire suddenly left the lodge and Margaret became the woman who “tried to prevent it.”
Claire read the message days later.
Her hands went cold.
“She had the ending ready.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Yes.”
That did not prove Margaret planned to kill Claire.
Prosecutors remained careful.
But it suggested Margaret had been imagining an abrupt disappearance from the family system before the staircase confrontation.
Maybe she expected to frighten Claire into leaving.
Maybe she intended to humiliate her.
Maybe the shove itself happened in a burst when Claire refused.
Intent at the exact second would remain a legal question.
The larger intent was clearer.
Margaret wanted Claire gone.
