Chapter 8 - the pearls became the simplest piece of evidence
Margaret maintained that Claire slipped.
For several hours, that remained her formal position.
Then investigators looked at the physical evidence.
The necklace mattered.
Claire’s hand had caught it as she fell.
Several pearls were found across the upper landing and staircase.
The clasp was recovered near the exact location where Margaret said she had been standing several feet away.
That was inconsistent.
If Margaret had not been immediately behind Claire, the necklace would not have been within reach at the moment Claire lost balance.
Claire’s bruising also included a distinct pressure mark high on the shoulder where Margaret had gripped her.
No single mark proved the entire sequence.
Together, they supported Claire’s account.
Then came an unexpected witness.
A lodge employee named Thomas Bell had been carrying fresh linens through a side corridor below the mezzanine.
He did not see the initial shove clearly.
But he heard Margaret say:
“You should’ve left when I told you.”
Then Claire:
“Let go of me.”
Then a heavy impact.
Then multiple impacts down the stairs.
Thomas looked up in time to see Margaret leaning over the railing and Claire falling.
He later saw Margaret immediately touch her neck.
His statement matched the physical evidence.
Margaret’s version weakened rapidly.
She changed it.
First:
Claire slipped while Margaret tried to stop her.
Then:
They were arguing and Claire grabbed the necklace before falling.
Then:
Margaret may have touched Claire’s shoulder but did not push.
Every revision moved slightly closer to Claire’s version.
Detective Holloway told Daniel:
“People think contradictions automatically prove the worst allegation. They don’t. But changing explanations do matter when they align with physical evidence.”
The pearls therefore became important for a simple reason.
They established proximity.
Margaret was exactly where Claire said she was.
Directly behind her.
And the broken strand captured the instant Claire reached backward during the fall.
