Chapter 10 - claire had not gone upstairs to threaten margaret
Margaret’s defense eventually argued that Claire confronted her aggressively over the estate papers.
Claire’s actual reason for going upstairs was simpler.
She was looking for the original family-company agreement.
Evelyn was due at five.
Daniel was driving back from Denver.
Claire wanted the papers ready before everyone met.
Margaret arrived unexpectedly around 4:30.
The estate manager let her in because nobody had yet told staff she should be excluded.
Margaret found Claire in the library wing holding the folder.
“What are you doing?”
“Getting documents.”
“For Evelyn?”
Claire looked at her.
“How do you know Evelyn is coming?”
That was the moment the argument changed.
Margaret had not been told.
At least not by Daniel or Claire.
Someone else must have informed her.
Later investigators discovered that Daniel had texted the lodge driver:
Please pick up Evelyn Shaw at the lower gate around 4:55.
Margaret still had access to the shared household scheduling tablet.
She saw the message.
That explained why she rushed to the lodge.
She knew Evelyn was returning.
She knew the hidden correspondence might surface.
She knew Richard’s memorandum could be produced.
Margaret told Claire to leave before Daniel arrived.
Claire refused.
“This is my home too.”
Margaret answered:
“No. It is the place my son brings you.”
Claire held up the folder.
“Your husband made sure that wasn’t true.”
That sentence triggered something.
Margaret stepped closer.
The argument moved toward the staircase.
Claire tried to walk away.
Margaret grabbed her shoulder.
“You should’ve left when I told you.”
Then shoved.
That chronology tied every piece together.
The papers.
Evelyn.
The hidden memorandum.
Margaret’s long campaign to keep Claire temporary.
The sudden violence when the story was about to collapse.
Nothing needed an inheritance trick.
The motive was already strong enough.
